Today it is Indian, but yesterday it was Zulu. Shaka had set up the capital of his kingdom, Dukuza, here. He was murdered under a tree by his half-brothers on 22 September 1928. A garden in his memory is located at the top of Couper Street. Even today, thousands of Zululanders converge on Stanger every year to celebrate Shaka's Day. The inner Zululand can be explored by taking the beautiful R74 road to Greytown. The Sappi company makes high quality paper from bagasse, the residue of the cane after the juice is extracted. This medium is used by the Tate Gallery in London for the reproduction of artworks.
