In 1812, Colonel John Graham named the camp he had just created Grahamstown. In 1830, the second most important town in Southern Africa became an intellectual and religious centre. In the streets, missionaries, ivory traders, wild hunters, soldiers of all ranks, poets, musicologists and great scientists crossed paths. The traveller crosses Grahamstown at full speed, yet this little piece of England offers the curious very good museums, charming bookshops, the most beautiful Church Square in the country and forty churches, a sort of cultural broth in an English garden. In short, that little something extra.
