Between the jaws of Cape Recife and Cape Saint Francis, from Port Elizabeth to Seal Point, the coastline is hit by the wind, hence the nickname "Windy City". The city experienced a considerable industrial boom in the 20th century, which shaped its architecture. Hundreds of companies are located in the suburbs such as Uitenhage, Despatch and Coega, with which it forms an urban cordon called the "Nelson Mandela Bay" metropolis of more than one million inhabitants. The "Windy City" extends its sprawling townships inland, while the wealthy areas are near the beaches, such as Summerstrand, where most of the hotels are.
