HOOP RESERVE
Nature reserve to discover the incomparable bird paradise of De Hoop Vlei.
In the Hoop nature reserve, we enter a temple of biodiversity. Here, there are no fewer than 36,000 hectares, featuring seven different ecosystems. We cross magnificent stretches of fynbos, the famous flowering bush endemic to the region, containing around 1,500 plant varieties. But above all, we discover the incomparable bird paradise of De Hoop Vlei. Mountain zebras, smaller and shorter-legged than savannah zebras, and numerous antelopes, including the bontebok, for which this reserve was created. Several trails lead down to the beaches. Here, you can snorkel in water of acceptable temperature... Yes, we're not in the Caribbean here! It's also the ideal place for a mountain-biking excursion: Mountain Bike Trail over 24 km, with an overnight stay along the way. In summer, don't forget your bug spray, as the area is haunted by millions of restless midges. For day treks:
De Hoop Coastal Trail. Walk along the beach and natural rock pools, preferably at low tide to walk on the beach.
De Hoop Klipspringer Trail (2h). Circular trail through the Porberg mountains, with views over the Breede River valley. Don't miss seeing the Cape Vultures along the way.
The Whale Trail 55 km, 5 nights, sleeping in refuges along the way, a superb experience to be booked well in advance.
