The ghostly site where Andries Hendrik Potgieter founded his independent republic of Zoutpansberg.
Andries Hendrik Potgieter founded his independent republic of Zoutpansberg here in 1848. A rebellious, wealthy republic centered around a village simply named Zoutpansbergdorp, whose population reached 1,500 in 1855. Elephant tusks were transported to Delagoa Bay on the Mozambican coast, where they were sold to Portuguese wholesalers. Today, to the right of the museum access track, search through the weeds for the Schoemansdal national cemetery, where trekker Hendrik Potgieter is buried. A ghostly atmosphere.
