SUDWALA CAVES
These caves are now buried in the vegetation of the Houtbosloop valley.
Once the haunt of Swazi groups, the caves are now buried in the vegetation of the Houtbosloop Valley. Thanks to the work of speleologist Harold Jackson, they are known to extend for at least 2,500 m. Legend has it that the partially explored network of chambers houses a treasure hidden by Paul Kruger. In the part open to visitors, above the Screaming Monster, primitive fossilized algae. 2,000 million years ago, these stromatolites photosynthesized the oxygen necessary for the appearance of life forms.
