Incredibly impressed with how well this trip was run. It certainly felt like an adventure as we enjoyed beautiful days of hiking through the gorgeous landscapes with barely any other tourists at all. The terrain changed from day to day - rocky, scrubby hill climbs to excellent views, lovely long valley strolls, dense humid riverbeds, and villages and farmlands to walk through.
Everyone was so friendly & it felt like a real privilege to see how the local villagers live and to see their craftsmanship. We loved Mr Kim’s Homestay, Mama Peng looked after us so well and cooked up a storm every night. The quality of the food was excellent! It was a perfect way to end the day sitting out with a beer, watching the activity of the village after a day’s hike.
Generally there was great catering for vegetarians too as wherever we went there were good veggies & tofu. Not necessarily a huge range or variety, but of course bear in mind you’re staying in a rural area. We were grateful to be eating food that we could see growing in the fields we passed.
Everything felt well organised and it was easy to have a good time. Some mornings we did some cultural things, and we always walked to explore the surroundings once we’d arrived in a new area. Our guide Sunny was indefatigably cheerful, friendly and fun! Ngoc the driver was easygoing and always drove us with care. We had such a good time on this trip, would highly recommend to anyone who loves hiking & wants to see the beauty of rural Northern Vietnam, far from crowds of tourists. Big thank you to Helen in the office too for arranging this trip for us, and who was always available on WhatsApp to answer any questions.

We had originally booked a private Babe lake and Ban Gioc falls tour but changed it to 3D2N in Sapa upon friends’ recommendations. Unfortunately we failed to check if winter would be a good time to go (the answer is no, everything is covered in thick fog and weather is perpetually damp), neither did the travel operator warn us nor recommend suitable travel plans. Instead she proposed an itinerary that included Fansipan, Silver falls, Cat Cat village and Ham Rong mountain. We saw nothing in Fansipan and Ham Rong due to thick fog and strong winds. Cat cat and Silver falls were the only saving grace. And when we requested to visit some tribal villages and rice fields instead, the guide said it was not in the itinerary and didn’t want to bring us there even though we abandoned our plans in Fansipan and Ham Rong halfway. He was also quite curt and a little impatient, always walking off on his own for a smoke. The hotel Pao Resort recommended by the travel operator was good. We also asked to stay in Topas Ecolodge but due to a miscommunication between the travel agent and the resort, it was cancelled. We changed our plans to Viettrekking Sapa and that turned out to be a complete disaster (poor service, stained towels, no phone, charged us for soiling the floor mat when obviously all shoes would be muddy in the wet weather). Overall, quite disappointing as we felt we wasted a lot of money (USD1602 for 3 pax sharing a room) time for this trip and it wasn’t satisfying.
