Capital of the province of the same name, cradle of the earlier Le (980-1009) and later Le (1225-1789) royal families, the Nguyen (1802-1954) and the Trinh family. The site received the name of Thanh Hoa in 1111. There are still some remains of the citadel of the Hô dynasty built in 1397 and classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The city was also the starting point of the revolt led by Le Loi against the Chinese (1418-1428). In addition to the Kinh, who are the majority, there are Muông, Thai, Lao and Lu ethnic groups in the region. The city of Thanh Hoa is 150 km from Hanoi, 140 km from Vinh and 16 km from Sam Son beach
