Of Khmer origin, My Tho became Vietnamese in the 17th century. The city has 200,000 inhabitants who live from rice, fruit and fishing. It is the starting point for boat trips on the Mekong to visit the surrounding islands. My Tho is also known because of the proximity of the hamlet of Ap Bac which was the scene of the first communist victory over the army of the Republic of Vietnam. Following the battle of Ap Bac (January 2, 1963), the Americans concluded that if they did not get directly involved on the ground, the Communists could not be defeated... My Tho offers a good insight into life in the delta.
