If you want to escape from the urban activity of Hania for a few hours, you can go to Agia (about 10 km southwest of Hania, towards Omalos) where there is a small lake with a kafeneion and a tavern, ideal for bird watching. There are regular buses to and from Hania, to avoid the car. The origin of the name of this village is probably Arabic(aia = waters). And indeed, the area is full of springs. During the second Byzantine period, the diocese of Kydonia (Hania) was transferred to Agia for security reasons and the church (dedicated to the Virgin) was built on the ruins of an ancient temple.
