On the Tisza, north of Szentes (Route 451), or by road 4519 from Ópusztaszer, Csongrád is an old town of fishermen, very popular with nature and outdoors enthusiasts. It is a quiet city and it reserves beautiful walks along the Tisza (the road has been built, but it is a train station in summer!). There are many possibilities, such as cycling, bath or horse riding. According to the writings of Anonymus, th century scribe, Csongrád castle was built by Summer, son of one of the magyars chefs. Originally built in land, it was transformed into an important fortress, which the Slavic masters had named Czernigrad or Black Castle. And it's this fortress that the city owes its name. A former royal capital, Csongrád was destroyed, as was his castle in the th century, during Mongolian invasions. Csongrád is well reconstructed and is a unique architectural ensemble on the Grand Plain (on the main square). Its concentric streets, whose role were defensive, are bordered by small houses with thatched roofs, which were over two centuries old, inhabited by fishermen and peasants.
