ÉGLISE CALVINISTE DE KOVÁCSHIDA
In the vicinity of Harkány and Siklós, a visit to the small Calvinist church of Kovácshida, a little-known gem in the region, is a must. Located in the heart of the Hungarian countryside, this 18th-century church is distinguished by its simple yet elegant architecture. But getting there requires a minimum of organization, especially if you don't have a car. There are direct buses to Kovácshida from Harkány, Siklós and Szigetvár, running every hour or two. So it's important to plan your journey carefully, as options are limited and there are no other attractions in the village.
The bus stop is about 600 meters from the church, easily identifiable by its striking bell tower. The church's whitewashed interior offers a bright, soothing atmosphere. Its coffers are adorned with magnificent hand-painted floral motifs, testifying to local craftsmanship. Kovácshida is one of a group of similar Calvinist churches in the Sellye region, along with those in Adorjás, Drávaiványi and Kórós. These buildings came into being after Emperor Joseph II's edict of 1781, which allowed Protestants to build their own places of worship, a major step forward for religious freedom in Hungary.
If by any chance the church is closed during your visit, call the telephone number on the door to obtain the key!
