CHURCH-ANCIENT MOSQUE
Former mosque of Ali Pacha, dating from 1596, converted into a baroque church in the late century in Szigetvár.
The building, formerly the mosque of Ali Pasha, was erected between 1588 and 1589 on oak stilts. Its square plan, pointed-arched windows and some Ottoman features remain, although the minaret has disappeared. After the Turks left, the building was converted into a Baroque Catholic church in 1788. The dome features a monumental fresco by István Dorfmeister, depicting the fall of Szigetvár and the heroic deaths of Zrínyi and Soliman. The baroque bell tower dates from 1780, and an old hammam basin is used for holy water.
