TOWER OF FIRE (TŰZTORONY)
48 m high tower built on the remains of the old watchtower in Veszprém. Its summit offers a fine view of the city.
The 48 m-high watchtower stands at the south-western end of the château, on medieval remains, the cylindrical part of which probably dates back to the Middle Ages. Mentioned as early as 1570 in military plans, it was reinforced in the 17th century. Damaged in 1810, it was renovated between 1811 and 1814 with a Baroque upper storey and circular balcony, designed to accommodate a lookout in charge of monitoring the fire day and night, hence its name "fire tower". The view of Veszprém and the Bakony Mountains from the top is breathtaking.
