NATIONAL MEMORIAL AND RUINS GARDEN
Medieval ruin garden at Székesfehérvár, a site preserving the remains of the foundations of the royal basilica.
The Medieval Ruins Garden preserves the remarkable remains of the foundations of the 11th-century royal basilica. This basilica was part of the ancient Alba Regia, now Székesfehérvár, the very first town founded in Hungary. This historic site has witnessed major events: 37 Hungarian kings were crowned here, and 17 of them found their final resting place. The Royal Basilica was not only a place of coronation, but also the guardian of the Holy Crown of Hungary and the royal insignia, symbols of power and national unity. It also housed the royal archives, making it a crucial administrative and spiritual center in the Middle Ages.
Among the treasures preserved in the Garden of Ruins is the carved sandstone sarcophagus of King Szent István, Hungary's first canonized king. Revered by the local population for over a thousand years, this sarcophagus is a unique and precious relic, bearing witness to the country's long history and deep-rooted Christian tradition. A visit to the garden offers an immersion in Hungary's medieval past, a journey to the heart of Hungary's historical and cultural identity, through exceptional archaeological remains, educational exhibits and an atmosphere imbued with solemnity and respect for ancestors. It's the place to go to understand the country's historical roots and appreciate its rich heritage.
