Liuzhou is one of the most populous cities in the Guangxi province. This industrial centre devoid of charm is often engulfed in a thick cloud of pollution. Located on the banks of the river of Willow (Liu Jiang) and 255 km from Nanning, Liuzhou was founded in 111 B.C. It was only in 1736 that the city took its current name. Previously the city was called the "dragon town". Liuzhou is surrounded by hills and karst landscapes. Travelling travellers will have the opportunity to visit some temples and enjoy some walks in the surrounding parks. The emblematic character of the city is poet and politician Liu Zongyuan (773-819) died in Liuzhou. A temple was set up in the centre of the city.
