This crater, formed by a giant 50-ton meteorite south of Halls Creek, is one of the largest in the world.
Located 105 km south of the town of Halls Creek, Wolfe Creek Crater was formed by a giant 50-ton meteorite that struck the earth at a speed of 15 km per second around 300,000 years ago. One of the world's largest craters, it measures 875 m in diameter and is almost 60 m deep! The crater has attracted many travellers since it was made famous by the horror film Wolf Creek (2006), which plays on its unusual electromagnetic activity. The trail is accessible by car in the dry season, but 4x4 is recommended.
