Located on the southwest shore of George Bay, a lagoon that protects the harbor, St. Helens is the largest fishing port on the East Coast. There are many shops and several gas stations. The town takes its name from its namesake on the Isle of Wight. Today, it is a popular seaside resort for fishing and boating activities. In the 19th century, it was a port for shipping ore after having been a whaling port for a long time. At the southern entrance to the city, the Percy Steel Reserve, a small city park on the shores of the bay, is home to an egg-shaped Time Capsule. Designed by the city's children, it will open in 2026.
