COCKLE TRAIN
This train, originally built in 1854, offers a historic 30 km route from Goolwa to Victor Harbor via the coast.
The Cockle Train, operated by the SteamRanger Heritage Railway, runs 30 km from Goolwa to Victor Harbor, through Middleton and Port Elliot. Its name derives from the early settlers who used the horse-drawn train to collect cockles from Goolwa's beaches. Today, it offers a glimpse into local railway history, with old diesel locomotives on weekdays and steam locomotives on weekends and during school vacations.
Itinerary. The journey begins in Goolwa, an ancient river port key to trade on the River Murray. After crossing the plains to Middleton, the train reaches Port Elliot, where the National Trust station houses a small museum. It's after this stop that the most beautiful part of the journey begins: an ascent to the coastal cliffs, revealing a spectacular view of the Southern Ocean and the beaches below.
The journey ends at Victor Harbor, where the locomotive is detached and turned on a 30-meter electric turntable before the return journey. No need for reservations: tickets can be purchased on the spot. An emblematic ride on the Fleurieu Peninsula, combining heritage and exceptional scenery.
Historic steam locomotives , such as the RX 207 built in 1913, are used during school vacations and weekends. Restored passenger coaches, some of which date from the early 20th century, retain their wooden benches and sliding windows, allowing you to enjoy the scenery.
