Welford alone summarizes the main regions of the Outback. Three ecosystems coexist around the Barcoo River: the arid expanses dotted with spinifex and the red sand dunes of the Channel Country, the vast treeless grassy plains of the Mitchell Grass Downs and the dry forests of Mulga Country. Camping is allowed in Little Boomerang. A camping permit is required (parks.des.des.qld.gov.au/).
