137 km from Townsville, Charters Towers is a former gold rush town. The town has retained a number of fine old houses with verandas and imposing public buildings. It is now the capital of country music: a festival is held here every year in late April/early May, and the rodeo is in July. It's also famous for its secondary schools, which provide boarding facilities for young people fromoutback towns. Ask at the information center for a tour of historic buildings with unique architecture, such as the Zara Clark Folk Museum, the World Theatre and the Stock Exchange Arcade.
