Karumba, 70 km from Normanton, is the only city located directly on the Gulf of Carpentaria accessible by a paved road. It is a small fishing port for shrimp, mud crab and barramundi. Explorers Burke and Wills arrived here, very close to the sea, in 1861, after having crossed the Australian continent from south to north. But the inextricable mangrove root belt prevented them from reaching the beaches of the Gulf. They died of exhaustion on the return journey. Karumba is divided into two parts: Karumba Point which faces the Gulf of Carpentaria and the port, located at the mouth of the Normanton River.
