The small town of Gin Gin, located 51 km west of Bundaberg on Gin Gin Highway, is immersed in history. The region was colonized by cattle and sheep breeders Gregory Blaxland and William Forster in 1847. The city's current location was formerly part of Gin Gin Station, owned by Sir Thomas Mcllwraith, former head of the Queensland government. It is now the centre of the commune of Kolan, with a population of 3 000.
