Gloucester, 108 km north of Newcastle and about 80 km from the coast, is a quiet town near Barrington Tops National Park and is the main gateway to the park. This national park is part of the World Heritage Site Gondwana Rainforests of Australia (listed as a World Heritage Site since 1986) and Barrington Tops & Gloucester Top, an important birding area. Although renowned for its hiking, mountain biking, fishing and camping are also practiced here. The main industries in the Gloucester area are tourism, timber and beef and dairy farming.
