The first European visit to the region dates back to 1820, when English explorer John Oxley reached the coast from the interior. He named the area after the governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie. The site on which the town now stands was originally a penitentiary to replace Newcastle, which was no longer isolated enough due to the development of agriculture, for convicts who had committed minor offences.Today, the town is famous for its beaches and Koala Hospital. Sea Acres National Park is also well worth a visit (www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/sea-acres-national-park).
