ROQUE BENTAYGA
Basaltic rocky peak at 1,400 m with numerous caves and an interpretation center
Heading west from Tejeda, you'll discover another basalt rocky peak of the same type as Roque Nublo. The Roque Bentayga rises to 1,400 metres, and was a favoured meeting place for the Guanches coming from the Cueva del Rey (King's Cave) and the Roque Camello, also carved with numerous caves where this pre-Hispanic people lived. On the eastern side of the base of this Roque, the place known as "almogaren de Bentayga" was a place of Guanche worship, a sacred place demarcated by a low stone wall. This interpretation is controversial, with some saying that it was simply a defensive fortress against invaders. Some engravings have also been found in this area, but their authenticity is also in doubt. An interpretation center is open to visitors at the start of the walk to Roque Bentayga. It's open all year round, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and until 6 p.m. at weekends, but it's best to call ahead as it's sometimes closed for technical reasons ✆ +34 928 47 48 51.
