MONASTÈRE DE PANAGHIA KALAMIOTISSA

Look out! You have to go to the old monastery (Pano Monastiri), and not to the new one (Kato Monastiri) located much further away. Panaghia Kalamiotissa is located in Kalamos, the steepest and most impressive area of the island, on the top of a 450 m hill. Built on the site of a temple of Apollo, the monastery was founded when an icon of the Virgin was found on a reed (kalami). You can see the ruins of a Venetian castle in the vicinity.
