HELLENISTIC TOWER

2.5 kilometres from Gavrion stands the five-storey tower of Agios Petros, which is worth a short detour. It is cylindrical in shape and remarkably well-preserved. It rises to a height of about 20 metres and was built in the so-called Hellenistic period (4th-3rd centuries BC). With a diameter of 9.40 metres at its base, the tower is built entirely of local schist. Inside, there is a spiral staircase that leads to at least five floors. The tower dominates the plain of Gavrio and offers a view of the sea.
