Visit the Arena and the gladiatorial fights
According to the legend, the Arena in Pula was built by fairies carrying stones from the Učka mountain all night, piling them up in a circle and, one after another, their city was built. But they didn't finish it, that's why the Arena is roofless today. So says the legend. Historical facts show, however, that the Arena was built in the 1st century. It is the sixth largest Roman amphitheatre in the world and the only one in which the three Roman architectural orders have been completely preserved. The Pula Arena was built for the Roman Games, and it has retained this recreational role. Many famous musicians have performed on this most beautiful open stage in the world over the past decades - the three tenors Domingo, Pavarotti and Carreras, then Montserrat Caballé, Andrea Bocceli, virtuosos such as Paco de Lucia, Vanessa Mae and the Two Cellos, top artists such as Sting, Joe Cocker, Julio Iglesias, Zuccero, Alanis Morissette and many others. Thanks to the film festival, which has been in existence since 1953, the city of the ancient Arena has hosted actors and directors; icons include Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Milos Forman, John Malkovich, Ben Kingsley, Jeremy Irons, Christopher Lee, Peter Ustinov, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange... It was originally the site of gladiatorial combat, which still takes place today, once a week, from late June to early September, except during the film festival. The unique "Spectacula antiqva" fights introduce spectators to a tradition that dates back to the 4th century BC and introduces them to life in Pula during the Roman Empire.
Although the Arena is the first and most important site in Pula, the entire old town with the Temple of Augustus and the Municipal Palace, the Triumphal Arch of the Sergians, the market and the Hercules Gate and the Double Gate, is worth a careful visit.
Brijuni National Park
One of the most beautiful excursions you can make from Pula is to the Brijuni National Park. The mild climate and favourable geographical conditions make the archipelago unique. There is also an interesting Safari Park, the Byzantine Castrum, the Mediterranean Garden, the Boat Shed in which a centre for interpretation and education of the Brijuni National Park was recently opened, or the mausoleum of the Kupelwieser family called the Kupelwieser Peace. You can also admire the oldest olive tree in the Mediterranean, which is over 1600 years old, or rent a bicycle and visit every corner of this paradisiacal archipelago.
Lighting Giants
The "Luminous Giants", these magnificent cranes from the Pula shipyard stand proudly at the entrance to the bay. They are illuminated and today represent a remarkable attraction. These eight hundred-metre cranes glow with thousands of colours every night with the help of 46 reflectors. They regularly change colour, creating special effects that illuminate the Pula night sky. This colourful spectacle can be admired from the early hours of the evening.
Aquarium de Pula
A little further from the city centre, on the Verudela peninsula, in a fortress dating from the Austrian-Hungarian period and more than 130 years old, is the Pula Aquarium, where the marine world is presented in a unique way. At present, more than 250 living organisms are spread over 2,600 square metres in more than 100 tanks. The Aquarium also has a centre for the recovery of sea turtles.
Verudela Art Park
With the realization of the nearby Verudela Art Park on an area of 5,500 square meters, Pula and Istria have obtained a new and interesting attraction for all ages. Along the sea, seven sculptures and installations by well-known artists have been created on the theme of travel and clouds.
Pula Arena
In recent years, thousands of spectators have been drawn to the Pula Arena by this unique spectacle of gladiatorial combat. This is the famous Spectacvla Antiqva, an event that takes place from June to September in the amphitheater, during which attractive and interesting gladiator fights are simulated, just as they were in the days of ancient Rome.
Visualia festivals
Visualia - Festival of Light, is a festival that attracts the attention of many local and foreign audiences.
It is the first Croatian light festival, and its eight years of existence are precisely the proof of its worth. Visualia represents the magic and beauty of new technologies and audiovisual arts, and has given Pula a special reputation.
Numerous light installations are set up in the city during the festival, bringing a magical light to Pula that delights young and old alike.
Tastings
From July 1 to mid-September, every Wednesday, we'll take you on a guided tour with traditional Istrian food and wine tasting. Departure opposite the Arena at 8 p.m. Tour guides are available in Croatian, English and German.
The museum / Galerie des Sacrés Coeurs
On the Kaštel hill, overlooking the town, is the monumental, recently renovated Sacred Hearts Museum.
In addition to exhibitions, the 480 square kilometer space will host conferences and concerts.
The Museum/Gallery is housed in the former Sacred Hearts Church, built in 1908 by the nuns of this Order. After the Second World War, the church was closed and the space handed over to the Archaeological Museum of Istria. Restoration of the building began in 1994, and after 17 years of work, the city of Pula received a very impressive museum/gallery space.
