On Monday mornings, an important zebu market is held in Ambatonapoaka; it is the closest zebu market to Tana. If it does not quite rival those of Ambalavao and Tsiroanimandidy, the largest in the country, the sound atmosphere is dominated by the muffled bellowing, the trampling of hooves that make the ground tremble, and the slapping of whips. All around, the gargotes offer rice dishes, fritters and drinks. Pastoralists, armed with their spears and draped in multicolored lambaoany, gather to discuss. In the evening, the RN 1 is invaded by the herds which go up towards the capital or leave towards the province.
