Some 120 kilometers and 2 hours (at the very least) after leaving Ambalavao, we reach Ihosy, a small town in the heart of the seemingly endless Horombe plateau. The surrounding countryside is planted with palm, mango, coconut and areca trees. One species dominates: the satrana palms, whose broad, serrated palms sway in the tepid wind. A pleasant, nonchalant town, Ihosy is above all a stopover for bush cabs on the southern route, which forks here and you have to choose: continue west towards Tuléar, east towards Farafangana, or due south towards Fort-Dauphin.
