In ancient times, it was considered one of the most important cities on the Black Sea. It was the birthplace of the Cynical philosopher Diogenes, known as "Sinope", in 413 B.C. The city is a natural port built on an isthmus. The destruction of a Turkish flotilla and the city by the Russians in 1853 caused the intervention of France and England against Russia and triggered the Crimean War. In some parts of the city you will find ruins of the castle and you can visit the oldest prison in the country. The peninsula offers several beautiful beaches. In the east, make a stop in Gerze which houses charming pensions.
