Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror commissioned the construction of this fortress in 1463. Situated on the west coast of the Dardanelles, it forms, along with Cimenlik Castle (in downtown Çanakkale) on the opposite shore, a strategic military posture for controlling comings and goings at the narrowest point of the strait. If you're passing through Eceabat, make sure you visit the small village of Kilitbahir and its castle.
