It was built on behalf of Rum Mehmet Paşa, vizier of Mehmed II the Conqueror, between 1471 and 1472, which is confirmed by the epigraph of the mosque. It is particularly remarkable from a woodworking point of view. The overhanging window arches and the alternating brick and stone beds give the building a Byzantine appearance. The mausoleum (türbe) of Mehmet Paşa, located at the back of the mosque, is an octagonal building of ashlar.
