It was usually built in the time of Emperor Leo I (457-474). The church of the Fifth century was probably reshaped on several occasions before being transformed into a mosque. Due to its strategic location (near the walls), it will also welcome holy relics, such as the Virgin's dress, to protect the city from external assaults.
