Museum with a charming Cafè d'Estiu with a patio with a fascinating collection

This museum preserves the works and collections gathered by the sculptor Frederic Marès, donated to the city in 1946. It is located in a wing of the former palace of the Counts of Barcelona, an imposing ninth-century complex of which only a few buildings remain today. The museum presents a vast collection of Hispanic sculptures, from antiquity to the 19th century, in which polychrome religious sculptures predominate. Thousands of objects such as reliquaries, jewelry and artifacts from the 19th century are also on display.

Collection d'art religieux trop répétitive à moins d'être un grand amateur
Nous voulions particulièrement voir les sculptures prélevées au monastère San Père de Rodes, visité plus tôt cette année, et nous n’avons pas été déçus – elles sont superbes! Par contre tout cet étage est dédié aux collections d’art religieux. Je n’ai jamais vu autant de variations sur un même thème en un même lieu: un grand nombre de vierges à l’enfant et de Christ en croix peu différents les uns des autres. Le sous-sol comprend de belles sculptures, des portes à voussures et même un portail d’église! Après avoir vu autant d’art religieux au rez de chaussée, nous avons renoncé à monter aux étages, ce que nous regrettons aujourd’hui car nous avons appris depuis que les autres collections de Marès (éventails, lunettes, pipes, clés, etc.) valent le détour, mais nous avons notre envie de flâner dans le quartier historique comme excuse.
