SAINT-ANTOINE MONASTERY

Saint Anthony is considered in the Christian world to be one of the founders of monasticism (secluded life in a monastery), and lived as a secluded hermit in the desert. His spiritual life was long tormented by battles with the devil. When he died, aged 105, a community settled near his tomb, creating this monastery. Founded in the ^4th century, today the monastery is home to around twenty Coptic Orthodox monks, who live by prayer, manual labor and intellectual pursuits. An exceptional place for those interested in spirituality.
