VALLEY OF THE GOLDEN MUMMIES

The discovery of this necropolis took place in 1996 and received a great deal of media coverage: it was while rescuing his donkey that a guard discovered it! It had been 30 years since any significant treasure had been found in Egypt, and the "golden mummies" were a wake-up call for Egyptomania and its myths! The necropolis is from Roman times and the mummies found, covered with gold plates, had the characteristic features of the art of the time.
