The most beautiful church in Cairo, built on the site of a Roman temple 10 m above ground, supported by towers and without foundations.

Built on the site of a Roman temple, the church was enlarged several times, most recently in 1775. Built 10 m above ground, it is supported by towers and has no foundations. The wooden ceiling, in the shape of Noah's Ark, is remarkable. The pulpit, supported by slender columns and inlaid with coloured marble, dates from the 11th century. The iconostases are finely chiselled and inlaid with ivory. It contains 110 icons, some dating from the early 10th century. One of the most beautiful churches in Cairo!

Bel édifice. Très bien conservé et entretenu. Nombreuses mosaïques dans la cour. Venir tôt le matin pour éviter la foule qui gâche la sérénité de la visite.

ON ACCEDE A CETTE EGLISE PAR DES ESCALIERS EN TRAVERSANT UNE COUR REMPLI DE MOSAIQUES QUI REPRESENTENT DES SCENES BIBLIQUES. CETTE EGLISE EST CONSTRUITE AU DESSUS DE TRONCS DE PALMIERS QUI LA SOUTIENNENT COMME DES PILOTIS. CEUX CI DATENT DU 4EME SIECLE. L'INTERIEUR DE L'EGLISE EST MAGNIFIQUE. ON PEUT VOIT UNE CHAIRE EN MARBRE SOUTENUE PAR 13 PILIERS QUI REPRESENTENT JESUS ET SES APOTRES. LE PILIER NOIR EST CELUI DE JUDAS
