BONASERA GRILL HOUSE
Read moreIt's the best place in town to go out, especially as it's located in Capri Point, close to all the tourist hotels. This very pretty bar-restaurant has a lively atmosphere at weekends, with concerts by small local bands. Unsurprisingly, the à la carte menu includes all meats, but especially good barbecued fish, and a host of meticulously-cooked Swahili and Tanzanian specialities. There's also a coffee house serving cakes and excellent espresso coffees, as well as a small supermarket.
MO & PRAGZ KITCHEN
Read moreLocated next to the Hotel Tilapia on the peninsula opposite the port and the island of Saanane (a national park), the view from this recently opened lakeside restaurant is superb. The food is delicious, even if you feel a little lost at first when faced with African, Chinese, Indian and Western specialties. No matter, Mwanza is cosmopolitan in both its people and its dishes. Truly delicious... The spicy garlic fish is succulent, as are the sweet & sour Chinese dishes. Also excellent cocktails and coffees.
KULEANA PIZZERIA
Read moreThe pizzas served here are in the Tanzanian style. Nothing to do with Italy, this is a thick-crust model with lots of cheese, which won't satisfy the lover of crispy dough. Plenty of things to nibble on the go. Finally, rather than the pizzas, we recommend the fish here, particularly the tilapia, very well prepared on a bed of tomatoes. This restaurant is very popular with local employees at lunchtime on weekdays. The atmosphere is friendly and prices are as local as the clientele.
SHAHENSHA RESTAURANT
Read moreTanzania is home to a large Indian community, both native and businessmen, in all the country's dynamic cities. Mwanza is no exception to the rule, and boasts a fine table of Indian specialties, a welcome change from Swahili or international dishes. Before ordering, be sure to check the spice level, as some dishes are very spicy. Plenty of vegetarian options, delicious cheese naans. The room doesn't look much, with plastic tables and chairs, but the prices are really affordable.
KIJIJI BAR & GRILL
Read moreCentrally located near the port roundabout, this is one of the best and liveliest restaurants in Mwanza, open 24 hours a day on weekends. Nice outdoor space with stylish tables and chairs, on weekends live concerts are programmed on Saturdays, matches are replayed on screen. We like to sip fresh juices and cocktails here (detox, booster, tropical...). Tanzanian dishes are tasty, you can find all kinds of meat and fish fried, roasted, cooked withugali (manioc), ndizi choma (plantains) or wali (coconut rice).
LAKAIRO RESTAURANT
Read moreHere's a friendly restaurant right in the center of Mwanza, ideal for a lunch or dinner break between two visits. A polished concrete floor and modern wooden tables and chairs give the restaurant a pleasant atmosphere. Here, you'll find excellent Swahili cuisine, both tasty and full of character, as well as Indian recipes, since the chef's name is Gopal and he is originally from that country. Don't hesitate to try the delicious fish. There's also an English and an Italian menu, but the real specialities are local.
