Morogoro is a city of some 300,000 inhabitants, but also an important economic center, thanks to the infrastructure linking it to the Tanzanian coast, and to its rich agricultural and industrial base. It is linked by an excellent road to Dar es Salaam, as well as by rail to the administrative capital Dodoma and the port of Mwanza. Morogoro also boasts shoe factories, textile mills, packaging factories, processing plants for all crops, sunflower and tobacco plantations in the region. The town is also home to a number of training institutes, including the school for primary school teachers and the university of agriculture. Morogoro's kitengues are the most famous in the country, and are sold on every fabric stall in Dar.Tourism. Morogoro itself is not very interesting except for its surroundings. In particular, the beautiful Mikumi National Park, just 50 km to the south-west along the Tanzam Highway. This is also the region of the magnificent Uluguru Mountains, which rise to an altitude of 2,000 metres and offer some very fine hiking. These mountains dominate the city to the south.
