Travel Guide Kremikovtsi (Кремиковци)

Located kilometres northeast of Sofia, on the shores of the Balkans. It is served by bus from the Eastern bus station (Iztok). This locality was first known for its metallurgical plant and then for its pollution. The monastery of Saint George was founded in the th century and then rebuilt several times. The old church houses frescoes from the th to th centuries which show the evolution of religious pictorial art during the period of Ottoman Domination. The best time to visit the monastery is during the great Orthodox festivals: St. George (6 May), Goliama and Malka Bogoroditza (Assumption and Birth of the Virgin, 15 August and 8 September respectively).
