SI SATCHANALAI HISTORICAL PARK
A historical park in Sukhothai, home to relics similar to those in Sukhothai, dating from the to centuries.
This historic park, 67 km north of Sukhothai, is well worth a visit for Siamese history buffs, but not only. The site was once the kingdom's second city and the residence of the crown prince. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, the site includes remains similar to those found in Sukhothai, dating from the 13th to 15th centuries. Located behind the Yon River, they are less well restored than those at Sukhothai.
Built in the 12th century, Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat is the site's most imposing temple, built in 1357, during the reign of Li Thai. It is accompanied by several statues representing Buddha in various positions. A prang was added by Boromtrai Lokanat in the 15th century. This temple is important because it has the second most venerated representation of Buddha in Thailand, after Wat Phra Keo in Bangkok. It is the last statue of the three initials. Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo and Wat Chang Lom are also well worth a visit. The former is a large temple complex and the main attraction of Si Satchanalai Historical Park. The temple compound has features influenced by Khmer, Lunar, Burmese, Lanna and, of course, Sukhothai architecture. The usual entrance is opposite the impressive Ceylonese-style stupa of Wat Chang Lom, distinguished by its bell-shaped chedi with three-tiered square bases resting on rows of elephant sculptures.
