KAMPHAENG PHET HISTORICAL PARK
A park classified as a historic heritage site, home to relics such as temple ruins and ancient fortifications...
The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. The ancient fortifications mark the limits of the old town, established along the same lines as Sukhothai. Most of the remains are located in this area, but a few monuments are also 2 km from the city center in an area known as the Aranyik Area. An entrance fee is required for each area. The park extends over a vast wooded area where you can visit the ruins of several temples, of which all that remains in many cases are the brick terraces and several laterite Buddha statues, more or less damaged by the weather. Not to be missed is Wat Phra Kaew, the royal temple and the highlight of any visit to Kamphaeng Phet. Its three well-preserved Buddhas, two seated and one reclining, are, along with the standing Buddha of Wat Phra Si Ariyabot, the most striking features of the Historical Park. Wat Chang Rop's chedi , supported by elephant statues, is another eye-catcher. Excavations are still underway to uncover sections of the fortifications buried beneath the embankments. The main area is easily visited on foot, while a bicycle or vehicle is required for the second area (Aranyik Area), located outside the ancient city limits, in the forest. Allow around 3 hours for a complete tour of the historic park. If you have to choose between the two, this park is more interesting than Si Satchanalai.
