Museum housing a collection of prehistoric and Gallo-Roman artifacts.

In 1903, Jean-Baptiste Bargoin bequeathed 200,000 francs to Clermont-Ferrand to create a museum. Until 2024, the museum housed two separate departments: one dedicated to prehistoric and Gallo-Roman archaeology, the other to textiles from around the world. In a few years' time, the museum will be devoted solely to the archaeology and history of the Clermont-Ferrand metropolitan area. During the redevelopment period, only the ex-voto items from the Source des Roches will be on display in their new setting. Appointments to go behind the scenes of the museum are also organized.

Une partie du musée n’était pas accessible mais le prix d’entrée était adapté (3€ je crois !). Superbe collection archéologique des périodes gauloise et gallo-romaine, très bien expliqué, documenté, très riche d’informations. Incontournable pour les passionnés d’histoire… et les autres ! De plus, le personnel était accueillant et très sympathique.

En tant qu'étudiante internationale en histoire ancienne, j'étais particulièrement enthousiaste à l'idée de visiter ce musée et d'accéder à ses collections. Tout le monde s'accorde à dire qu'il s'agit d'une excellente expérience. Cependant, en arrivant, il y avait simplement un panneau sur ses portes fermées indiquant qu'il est FERMÉ jusqu'au 18 avril 2023. Bien que les fermetures de musées pour travaux de rénovation soient tout à fait compréhensibles, il n'y avait aucune mention de cela en ligne sur aucun des sites officiels (y compris le site web du tourisme régional). J'ai été très déçue par ce manque de communication, et ceci, combiné à l'absence de transport public vers le site du temple du Puy de Dôme dans la région, signifiait qu'il n'y avait pas de sites d'histoire ancienne accessibles dans la région. En conséquence, j'ai écourté mon séjour (4 heures au total) pour retourner à Lyon pour quelques jours, où les sites culturels anciens sont abondants et excellents.
