The star of Puerto Madryn today is the right whale, but the history of the city begins as early as 1865: a colony of 150 Welshmen landed on the coast, aboard the Mimosa, and named the city after Baron de Madryn, the captain who initiated the expedition. After the establishment of the national aluminium plant in the 1970s, the city became a booming seaside resort, popular with Argentines who enjoy the clear waters of Golfo Nuevo. Thanks to its very good tourist infrastructure, it is a pleasant destination and the best place to stay in the region. It is also Argentina's diving capital and is home to a marine wildlife study centre
