City of more than 250,000 inhabitants located on the left bank of the Paraná River, formerly known as Bajada del Paraná. The descendants of Juan de Garay, founder of Buenos Aires (one of the two founders, at least!) and of Santa Fé (in 1573), decided to settle there to control the river's floods and cultivate the rich arable land. The city took shape in the 17th century, but was not officially recognized as such until 1730. In 1854, it was the provisional capital of the Argentine Confederation; today it is an industrial and commercial provincial capital, which enjoys a happy location on the banks of the beautiful river.
