This is Polonnaruwa's major ensemble: a group of 4 12th-century Buddhas, carved into the cliffside. The rock has been hollowed out to a depth of almost 4 metres to create the necessary relief for the statues. The first seated Buddha meditates on a throne decorated with lions. The second is surrounded by the 2 Hindu deities, Brahma and Vishnu. The third stands 7 meters high. The fourth Buddha reclines at a height of 14 metres. The whole complex is frequently under renovation, and has been covered with a corrugated iron roof to protect it.

La présence d'une toiture métallique couvrant l'ensemble gâche un petit peu le spectacle.
