This garden, founded in 1810, at the time of the Illyrian Provinces, contains more than 4,500 species, a third of which are local. Its affiliation with the University of Ljubljana enables it to be at the forefront of research and teaching and to play a major educational role in the safeguarding and knowledge of endangered species. Its imposing greenhouse, built for the 200th anniversary of the garden, is home to some strange tropical species.
