Kalibo, Aklan's oldest town, is also the province's capital, with a population of around 100,000. It lies 160 km northwest of Iloilo. For travellers, it is primarily a gateway to the island of Boracay. However, it is a must-see during the Ati-Atihan festival, certainly the most famous festival in the Philippines. Held in January, over 55 tribes parade in outrageously colorful traditional costumes. Spectacular! Finally, Kalibo is the heart of piña production in the Philippines. Weaving piña (pineapple fiber) is a tradition that dates back to the 8thcentury . The silky fabric is used to make barongs, placemats and tablecloths (ask at the tourist office to visit a workshop).
